چکیده

Two-tier cellular networks provide an enhanced use of the networks' resources for both high and low speed users. However, they cause an increase in the number of handoffs between cells due to having smaller cell sizes in the microcell tier. An effective approach used to prevent the dropping of ongoing calls in a network is delaying these calls in a queue until a channel becomes available. In this paper, we propose a new Markov model for a two-tier cellular network having a FIFO queue in the microcell tier. The performance of the model is then compared with those of a previously proposed model having a queue in the macrocell tier and the effect of having a queue in the microcell or macrocell on both high and low speed users is observed. Keywords—Blocking probability, FIFO queue, Markov chains, Two-tier cellular networks.

Modeling and analysis of queuing handoff calls in single and two-tier cellular networks

Two-tier cellular networks consist of a group of contiguous microcells overlaid by a macrocell. This design provides an enhanced use of the networks’ resources for both high and low speed users because of the availability of additional channels. However, this causes an increase in the number of handoffs between cells due to having smaller cell sizes in the microcell tier. Since, handoff call bl...

Adaptive call admission control and resource allocation in multi server wireless/cellular network

The ever increasing demand of the subscribers has put pressure on the capacity of wireless networks around the world. To utilize the scare resources, in the present paper we propose an optimal allocation scheme for an integrated wireless/cellular model with handoff priority and handoff guarantee services. The suggested algorithm optimally allocates the resources in each cell and dynamically adj...

Performance Analysis of Sub-Rating for Handoff Calls in HCN

Hierarchical Cellular Networks (HCN) offer more efficient channel utilization and better quality of service (QoS) under the high tele-traffic condition compared to the single-tier system. One of the important measures of QoS in HCN as in any single-tier system is the handoff dropping rate. Although the existing approaches such as guard channel and queuing can reduce forced termination probabili...

Call admission and handoff control in multi-tier cellular networks: algorithms and analysis

In this paper, we investigate a call-admission and handoffcontrol framework for multi-tier cellular networks. We first propose and compare Call-Admission Control (CAC) algorithms based on the cell-dwelling time, by studying their impact on the handoff-call dropping and new-call blocking probabilities and the channel partitioning between the two tiers. Our results show that a simple, cell-dwelli...
